Help us stop church taxation in Maine

January 23, 2013 No Comments by Deb Wagner

We sent this out to our pastor’s list.  Your pastor may not be on that list.  Please ask your pastor to help us gather data on Maine church property already being taxed so that we can stop its spread and end its practice.

In conjunction with Alliance Defending Freedom, the Christian Civic League is assisting the Aldersgate United Methodist Church against efforts by the town of Rockland to tax their assets. This small congregation’s ministry is being jeopardized by this alarming trend of municipalities to tax church property.

ADF attorney Joel Oster needs some information from other pastors as soon as possible for this case.  In addition, The League is gathering information for a bill that would prevent municipalities from taxing church property.

Please contact Carroll Conley — 659-6447, clcll@yahoo.com — Executive Director of the Christian Civic League, with answers to these two questions now or as soon as possible:

1.  How many acres is your church property (excluding the parsonage)?

2.  Is anyone being taxed by their municipality for church property?  If so, what percentage is being taxed?
