Jan. 14, 2012, Augusta.  According to a St. Michael’s School official, over 500 people—along with Governor Paul LePage—gathered at Maine Right to Life’s annual “Hands Around the Capitol” pro-life rally on Saturday.  The group then walked from the school’s auditorium to the Capitol building where they joined hands and listened as bells tolled for the millions of babies killed by abortion.

At the standing-room only rally, Rep. Ellie Espling spoke about the joys and challenges of sponsoring an Informed Consent bill in the last legislative session.  Rep. Espling, spoke “from the heart” as she told the audience how some legislators “struggled” with pro life issues up to the moment they voted.

“Your stories about the importance of life made a difference for many legislators.  Keep telling your stories,” encouraged Rep. Espling who told the audience that she was born the 39 years ago, the year Roe v Wade was made abortion legal.

Governor LePage mingled with the appreciative crowd and sat in the audience.  There was a standing ovation when the Governor was introduced.  The microphone was handed to him from the stage and the Governor spoke about his support for this annual pro-life event.

“The press makes us out to be the big bad guy.  But we care about people and families.  Today is important.  It’s important we get together to care about life,” said Governor LePage.

When the Governor finished, a supporter in the audience called out, “You’re the man.”

Bob Emrich, the Christian Civic League (CCL) Board Chairman and Maine Right to Life Board member, reminded the audience that, “Our work this year has only begun.  There is a real opportunity this November to support life.  Please vote for life and not the party.”

The rally also provided an opportunity for supporters to purchase bumper stickers, pins, and take home plenty of information from numerous pro life organizations.

 “The Christian Civic League can help you stay informed about pro-life legislation this session.  Friend us on FaceBook.  Sign-up for our weekly e-news and action alerts or visit our web site,” said Carroll L. Conley, Jr., CCL’s Executive Director.

Prior to the rally Conley led a Prayer Service at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church for 30 Protestants from several traditions.

The CCL encourages Maine Christians to pray for:

  • All unborn Mainers;
  • Legislators and our pro-life governor as bills that will protect women and save babies go through the legislative process;
  • Pastors to advocate for life from the pulpit; and
  • Christian Mainers to write their legislators and contact the media in support of specific pro-life legislation.

If you or someone you know is willing to help pro-life legislation, please contact Carroll L. Conley, Jr at clcll@yahoo.com or call (207) 659-6447.
