Faith Matters in Maine UPDATE – February 22, 2013
For years, consuming alcohol in the morning has been associated with problem drinking or alcoholism. Yet now, our state legislature is considering bills allowing the purchase of alcoholic beverages at the crack of dawn. The common sense behind this traditional regulation is being attacked with arguments of promised financial gain, liberation from “obsolete” blue laws, and yes, even cultural celebration. It is fashionable to decry the ravages of alcohol abuse in our society, but don’t you dare speak against economic development. And certainly, we want to continue the stereotyping of Irish as lushes. (I remind you, my last name is Conley ). Do we really want to send the message you can’t celebrate a holiday unless alcohol is flowing at 6 AM.?
