A Thoughtful Email and Response
Mike Hein
Dear Mike Heath and Michael Hine (sic),

I am a supporter of the League, and concerned citizen of Maine. I greatly appreciate the League and your constant efforts to speak up for righteousness and against the evil compromises and the decline of morality in our state (and nation). You take the heat by speaking up boldly in the public eye, when "average" Christian Mainers like me are going about our lives trying to make a difference in whatever way we can.

Comfortable Christianity
A few days ago, we received an email here in the League office. It was from a married couple, evangelical Christians who lead a small congregation in rural Maine. It read in part, “I am here to preach the gospel and not to get involved in politics. I truly do not believe that slot machines are good for Maine…but I still have to say I cannot do what you asked of me.”

And what exactly was it that was asked of this sincere, committed Christian couple? Were they asked to move mountains, extract water from stone, or feed five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fish? No, no miracles were asked of them. Instead, they were asked to help stop slot machine gambling in our state.

They were asked to volunteer and assist the No Slots for ME! signature collection effort to get the issue on the ballot for 2007. It was a simple proposition: donate of your time and talents, and we may be able to stop the vice of slot machine gambling in our state, period. And yet, these good people refused. Why?

Our Governor's Deal with the Cuban Communist Devil
On the occasion of Communist Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s eightieth birthday, I will take a few moments to reflect on the significance of Maine Governor John Baldacci’s meeting with Castro and trade agreement deal from last year. The Cuban “President-for-Life” is recovering from intestinal surgery and meeting with the Venezuelan socialist (and fellow dictator) Hugo Chavez. With Castro back in the news, I cannot help but recall the time last winter when our Governor met with this tyrant, shook his hand, and warmly praised him. For those of us with short memories, please review the photos that the Christian Civic League of Maine helped make public here, here, and here.

I agree with outgoing Maine Senate Republican Leader Paul Davis’s comments from that time...

Abortion and Homosexual Rights: An Election Day Catch-Phrase for Maine is Born
The Bangor Daily News is the only daily newspaper serving northern Maine. As such, it is a vital resource of information for many Mainers. It provides much valuable content to the people of this region. Many of their readers are Christians. The management and reporters have every reason to be proud of their paper, they do good work.

Having said that, I'd like to examine the Bangor Daily News article from Saturday, August 5, 2006 (Abortion, gay rights might not turn vote.) In my view, it is contrived and disingenuous. Reading it, I could not help but imagine the proverbial square peg being forced into a round hole. The ‘square peg’ is Republican gubernatorial candidate Chandler Woodcock. The ‘round hole’ is the description of him as an outspoken Christian man of faith. The attempt to portray the Senator as a fire-and-brimstone Baptist preacher man is weak journalism. The article contains vague assertions and offers little that is news.
