Senator Chandler Woodcock in Vietnam
Senator Chandler Woodcock's campaign issued a press release today trumpeting a Rasmussen Poll.  The poll shows the Republican gubernatorial challenger just one point behind the incumbent Democrat John Baldacci.  The two men face one another on the November 7 ballot.

While Woodcock loudly proclaimed his support for traditional marriage and human life in the Republican primary, today's press release did not mention those issues, or the fact that he is a lay Baptist preacher.

Woodcock's only interaction with the Christian Civic League of Maine was a spring 2006 off-the-record meeting with League director Michael Heath.

In addition to proclaiming the poll's good news the press release rehearses stock Republican talking points on jobs, taxes and affordable health care.

Woodcock is a family man, according to the release.  He has four children and two grandchildren.  He also coached girl's basketball during his 26 year public school teaching career.  He served in Vietnam.

"I wish he would talk more about his Christian faith publicly,"  Said League director Michael Heath.  "The people of Maine should know his views on religion as it relates to public policy ... especially abortion and the homosexual agenda."

Heath is going to vote for Senator Woodcock in November.  He said that he is very pleased with the fact that the Senator is adamantly opposed to "gay" rights, and that his position on abortion is better than his opponents.

Heath lamented Woodcock's support for the expansion of slot machine gambling while observing that his opponent allowed the slots to be installed in his own home town of Bangor.  Governor Baldacci, who claims to be against gambling, could have put the issue out to another vote after the controversial results of the 2003 elections.

The League does not endorse candidates.
