Governor Speaks at Same Sex Marriage Rally
The granite walls of the State House rang with cheers and loud applause Wednesday morning as Governor Baldacci made a surprise appearance at a boisterous rally for same sex marriage. The crowd of approximately 80 to 100 activists, all wearing red, jammed the staircase leading from just outside the Governor’s Office to the third floor of the Capitol Building. The crowd erupted in applause several times during Governor Baldacci's brief remarks, as he repeatedly praised same sex marriage, saying that his support for "marriage equality" was the proudest moment of his career.

Augusta Gives Green Light to Pot Farms
The city of Augusta has moved one step nearer to allowing a controlled substance to be grown and sold within a few miles of the State House. Marijuana is currently listed alongside LSD and heroin as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act, as part of U.S. federal drug policy. In order to qualify as a Schedule I controlled substance, a drug must have no accepted medical use, no accepted safety when used medically, and a high potential for abuse.

More Laws, But Less Safety
Now that the Maine Legislature has adjourned until fall, it may be time to reflect on the actual number of laws produced. Statistics are still being compiled, but the Second Session of the Legislature will no doubt produce roughly the same number of laws passed in the First Session. The most notable of these laws had the dubious name "An Act To End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom." This was
the same sex marriage law, which passed overwhelmingly in the
Legislature in the spring of 2009, and was repealed later that year.

Is Marijuana Really Medicine?
Why is Maine leading the nation in the
push for
"medical marijuana?" Medical marijuana has been legal in Maine since
1999 for the treatment of
patients with severely debilitating diseases, but no
mechanism was in place for the large-scale distribution of
the drug
to patients. In November 2009, voters approved "An Act to
Establish the Maine Medical Marijuana Act"
which led to an Executive Order by Governor Baldacci establishing a
fourteen-member Maine Medical Marijuana Task Force to implement the law.

Augusta Seeks Major Expansion of Gambling 'Industry'
Lawmakers
in Augusta are poised for a major expansion of gambling with
the help of new legislation that has escaped the notice of much of the
public. Spurred on by the success of Hollywood Slots, legislators have
put forward a plan in which the state government will directly control
slot machines and casino gambling, both of which have a long
association with organized crime, and were formerly criminal
activities under Maine law. The laws governing gambling in Maine are still listed in the Maine criminal statutes between "Assault and Battery" and "Bigamy."

Hands Around the Capitol
The annual Hands around the Capitol Rally and March took place this past Saturday in Augusta. The annual event, which is organized by Maine Right to Life, is intended as a public expression of mourning for the loss of life caused by abortion since the passage of the Supreme Court decision Rowe v. Wade.
To judge from the standing-room only crowd, the Pro-Life movement is growing rapidly. The crowd was larger than in earlier years, and was estimated at 400 - 500 people. Further evidence for the growing strength of the Pro-Life movement are the buses going to the March for Life event in Washington on January 20 - 23rd. Seats on the buses have already been fully booked, and there is a waiting list for cancellations.

Press Release
In January last year, the homosexual rights lobby used Senator Dennis Damon to introduce a bill to legalize same sex marriage. Not only did the bill legalize same sex marriage, it made all terms pertaining to the family, words such as 'husband and wife', 'father and mother,' gender neutral. It was a travesty to introduce such a bill at a time of deep economic crisis, a fact acknowledged by Governor John Baldacci, the most liberal governor in Maine history.
The bill was shepherded through the Maine Legislature by Larry Bliss, a homosexual activist from California, now head of the Judiciary Committee. During the campaign to repeal the law, the No on 1 side offered a sanitized view of same sex marriage, marketing their product with commercials which showed 'married' homosexual couples and their children, all smiling, healthy, and content in a typical Maine setting.

Governor "More Committed Than Ever to Same Sex Marriage"
In a scene straight out of Caligula's palace or one of Nero's infamous garden parties, Maine's Governor Baldacci dined with same sex marriage supporters in Boston, while a pair of homosexual acrobats, suspended from the ceiling by a sash, twirled round and round in the air, their colorful capes flowing out behind them. The $225 per plate affair was intended to honor politicians who have done the most to help the cause of same sex marriage, and came less than two weeks after the repeal of the same sex marriage law by the voters of Maine.

State House Called on Religion During Gay Marriage Debate
Following the repeal of Maine's same sex marriage law, the public heard many angry comments from gay activists who claimed religion was the deciding factor in their loss. Religion was indeed an important consideration for many voters, but it is not generally known that during the debate over the same sex marriage law, legislators in Augusta made frequent reference to their own religious principles. The following quotes, excerpted from speeches made in the Maine Legislature, show that lawmakers often invoked religion to justify their positions for or against gay marriage. The quotes provide a fascinating insight into the thinking of our lawmakers, and are on occasion unintentionally amusing, or in the case of the remarks by the Senate President, tragic.
