As the news has extensively reported, the Portland School Committee recently voted to allow King Middle School to give prescription contraceptives and abortion pills to 11 - 14-year-old children.

The League has previously called for the Maine Attorney General to investigate this criminal sexual activity.

Others are collecting Portland resident signatures to recall some of the sitting Committee members.

The League now asks for you to contact Maine's legislative leaders to further urge action on this issue.

State Senator Douglas M. Smith (R-Piscataquis County) is sponsoring a bill to prohibit any Maine school district from giving prescription contraceptives to schoolchildren without parental consent.

A majority of legislative leaders will have to agree to give permission for this bill to be considered next year.  These leaders need to hear from you right now.

Contact the Legislative Council and urge them to allow Sen. Smith's Contraceptive Parental Consent bill to be considered in the upcoming Legislative session.  Even if they ultimately disagree with the bill, ask them to approve of its consideration.

Maine's Legislative Council (123rd Legislature):

Sen. Betheda (Beth) G. Edmonds, President of the Senate, Legislative Council Chair, Edmonds@gwi.net
Rep. Glenn A. Cummings, Speaker of the House, Legislative Council Vice Chair, RepGlenn.Cummings@legislature.maine.gov
Sen. Elizabeth (Libby) H. Mitchell, Senate Majority Leader, SenLibby.Mitchell@legislature.maine.gov
Sen. John L. Martin, Senate Asst. Majority Leader, SenJohn.Martin@legislature.maine.gov
Sen. Carol Weston, Senate Minority Leader, cweston@pivot.net
Sen. Richard W. Rosen, Senate Asst. Minority Leader, rrosen113@aol.com
Rep. Hannah Pingree, House Majority Leader, hannah@pingree.com
Rep. Sean Faircloth, House Asst. Majority Leader, sfaircloth@gwi.net
Rep. Joshua A. Tardy, House Minority Leader, tardylaw@adelphia.net
Rep. Robert H. Crosthwaite, House Asst. Minority Leader, bcrosthwaite@verizon.net

Sample text for the email:

"Dear Legislative Council leaders and members,

Please vote to allow State Senator Douglas Smith's Contraceptive Parental Consent bill to be considered in the upcoming Legislative session.

As a Maine citizen and voter, I ask that you give permission to have this bill proceed due to the emergency nature of the issue it addresses.

Maine's parents must have the right to know what prescriptions are being given to their minor children.

Even if you ultimately disagree with the bill and will vote against it, I encourage you to allow this bill to be heard in the 2008 session."
