Planned Parenthood Pays for 'Push Polling'

Planned Parenthood PAC
Over $918 has been spent within the last week by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England's Action Fund -- MEPAC on the campaign of Maine Democrat State Representative Candidate Deane Jones of Mount Vernon.  Jones is running for the Legislature's vacant House District 83 seat against Republican Penelope "Penny" Morrell.  Morrell is employed by Maine Right to Life.  Jones was endorsed by EqualityMaine in his failed bid for the same office last year.

According to public documents published by the Maine Ethics Commission, independent expenditures for Jones of $592.39 and $325.67 were reported by Planned Parenthood's Scarborough, Maine office on May 30 and June 1, respectively.  Both reports were submitted by Christopher G. Quint, the Planned Parenthood political action committee's Treasurer, using the address 51 U.S. Route 1, Suite C, Scarborough, ME 04074, and the phone number (207) 510-2201.

The May 30 campaign expenditure by Planned Parenthood to Jones was paid to Broadcast Solutions, 13806 Goosefoot Terrace, Rockville, MD 20850, Buzzy Cohn, President, (301) 869-5005, info@broadcastsolutions.netbuzzycohn@yahoo.com.
This expenditure was for a phone "push poll" on behalf of Jones that condemned Morrell for her pro-life social issue stance.  This negative campaigning is seldom used in local State Representative races.

The tactic involves phone calls to homes in the legislative district (Manchester, Belgrade, Fayette, Mount Vernon, and Vienna) asking likely voters if they support the Democrat candidate Jones, if they support Jones's opponent (unnamed) who is against "a woman's right to choose [abortion]," or if they are undecided.  According to Mount Vernon Town Selectman Bruce Inch, he received just such a call on May 29, prior to the expenditure being reported.

The June 1 campaign expenditure by Planned Parenthood for Jones was paid to Print World, Inc. (High Point Graphics), 474 Riverside Industrial Parkway, Portland ME 04103, (207) 878-5188, Dick Lennon, President, dicklennon@printworld.bz.  This expenditure is for printing and mailing of pro-abortion literature advising local residents to vote for Jones.

According to a recent Capital Weekly news article, Jones said, "Roe v. Wade gave women the right to choose. I do not want to see that change. The decision should be between a woman and her doctor."  A recent Kennebec Journal news article by Susan Cover stated, "Jones supports abortion rights and thinks gays and lesbians should be allowed to have their relationships formally recognized, either through civil unions or marriages."

The House District 83 Election will be held on Tuesday, June 12.
