Why I am a PACman

Some of you may have seen the big news over the weekend.  The League's board decided to endorse candidates through the political action committee (PAC) that it formed a few years ago.  The first two candidates to receive our endorsement were Mike Huckabee and Dean Scontras.  Both men are, appropriately, Republicans.  On the same day that the board made these choices the Maine GOP decided to include a pro life and pro marriage plank in their 2008 platform.  This distinguishes the GOP from the Maine Democratic Party on the most critical social issues of our time.

I look forward to the day when we are more likely to be interested in Democrats, and vice versa.  Alas, today is not that day anymore than September of 1900 contained the day when the League was likely to be interested in Democrats.  While the League is non-partisan by constitution we have never been non-involved.  The very first issue of the RECORD, published in September of 1900, contained a defense of the League by ministers of the day.  They were being accused of being "an annex of the Republican party."

If you have followed me over the years you know that I unenrolled from the Republican party in 2006.  I did so in deep frustration over the failure of my party (As a private citizen I ran as a Republican in 1992 for the House of Representatives and was a registered Republican) to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the League to defend marriage in 2005.  Notwithstanding this we nearly defeated our opponents in that contest earning 47 percent of the vote.

It is time to move on.  Today, I will re-enroll in the Republican party.  As executive director of the League I will continue to work with anyone -- Democrat, Republican or unenrolled -- who agrees with us on issues.  In the interest of full disclosure, however, I will be working in my capacity as a citizen of Maine for candidates with whom I have substantial agreements, and for change within the Republican party.

As executive director of the League's political action committee I will do what I can to help candidates who we endorse.  These efforts will have to be voluntary until we have figured out the Federal Elections Commission rules and forms.  If any of you can help us with that please call or email me.  Huckabee and Scontras supporters who want to see these men do well at the caucuses in three weeks should contact me today.
