Ruth Summers is Impressive, Dean Scontras More Impressive Still

I was able to hear Ruth Summers speak for the second time at a meeting this week.  She was impressive.  She represents her soldier husband well.  Charlie is running for the first district congressional seat.  He is not able to campaign because he is deployed to Iraq.  He won't get back until after the primary election in June.

While Mrs. Summers is impressive, Charlie's opponent Dean Scontras is more impressive still.  Mr. Scontras is taking a risk and running a campaign that violates the conventional poll driven wisdom of the Maine Republican Party.  Mr. Scontras must defeat Charlie, clearly the insider's favorite, to earn his go at the Democrats in the general election this fall.

Scontras put out a press release this week announcing his Faith and Values Coalition.  I was listed along with over twenty other respected pastors and leaders.

Dean's risk is minor to me, but major to many others in Maine.  He has decided to publicly identify with evangelical Christians in the primary.  Chandler Woodcock made a ham-handed attempt at this in his bid for Governor, and won his primary, only to lose the general election.  Scontras is doing a better job of it, so far.

Dean could win the primary and general election if he refuses to back down to the thugs in Maine who want to marginalize evangelical Christianity.  If he tries to outsmart them he will deserve to lose.  He must simply identify with good people everywhere, be they evangelical Christian or not.

Good people want to see an end to the excesses of the sexual revolution.  Abortion and homosexuality are excessive.  If Dean articulates his views well on these two key social issues he may end up in Washington.  If he tries to ignore them, or go liberal on them, he will lose.

I've rarely met a politician in Maine who is more well informed on contentious social issues, and willing to make a connection between his passionate commitment to his extended Greek family and his politics.  Normally socially conservative political candidates in Maine distance themselves from their religion and traditional family life.  They prefer to talk about thin political gruel like taxes and money.

Meanwhile the left is red blooded, protecting the immorality of pagan shrines and sexual insanity.

Scontras went into a den of leftism recently and participated in a debate.  Mrs. Summers was there, along with a gaggle of leftist Democrat candidates.  Dean challenged her in front of this libertine crowd on abortion and homosexuality.  Mr. Dean's courage was quite a contrast to what appeared to be Ruth's pandering.  Supporting the insanity of "gay marriage" she demeaned her own marriage by joking with the homosexual activists in the crowd saying, "(Homosexuals) should have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us (heterosexuals)."

Ruth Summers is impressive.  Dean Scontras is more impressive still.
