| Virginia Bubar and Mike Heath |
Yesterday
I enjoyed myself. I honored the League's legacy. I spent some time
visiting with Virginia Bubar. Virginia is Ben's widow.
A
columnist recently pointed out the similarities between Benjamin Bubar
Jr. and me. He remarked on our willfulness, and commitment to moral
principle.
I can never hope to achieve Ben's stature, of
course. He is gone to heaven now. He was known for a smile that
wouldn't quit. Ben smiled no matter what his political adversaries
said about him. Before Ben died over a decade ago I visited with him
nearly a dozen times in his home. He taught me an old truism which
I've learned is basically true. He said of the critics in the media,
"Don't worry about it as long as they spell your name right!"
Ben
and Virginia made the League the powerhouse that it is today, much to
the chagrin of those who want to see Biblical definitions of the common
good disappear.
Ben's grandfather -- inspired by Billy Sunday --
spread the gospel near the turn of the twentieth century, and his
father after him. Ben Jr. kept the fire burning, and the League
carries on!
