EMILY's List Not Identified As Pro-Abortion In Maine Newspapers
 | | Chellie Pingree |
Regional Associated Press writer Francis Quinn reported this week that former Maine State legislator
Chellie Pingree received the endorsement of pro-abortion EMILY's List in her bid for Congress next year. Many local and regional news outlets published the news including the Bangor Daily News, the
Portland Press Herald, the Kennebec Journal, the
Lewiston Sun Journal, the
Boston Globe,
Fosters.com, the
Providence Journal, and others.
While the report went into great detail about the 2008 federal Congressional races and who Pingree is, it did not highlight the significance of what EMILY's List is until the last sentence of the ten-paragraph story.
After quoting both Pingree and EMILY's List President Ellen Malcolm, identifying Pingree, and listing the other Democrat and Republican candidates for the open Congressional seat, Quinn noted that EMILY's List has "helped to elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office" at the close of the article.
Quinn stopped short of describing the national organization itself as "pro-choice" or "pro-abortion" despite
the group's website stating it's mission is "to elect pro-choice Democratic women to office."
The Portland (ME) Press Herald and Kennebec Journal both published Quinn's AP article in abbreviated form as a "Local/Maine Dispatch." In doing so, the papers removed all but the first several paragraphs of the story. Neither of these abbreviated stories stated that EMILY's List was pro-abortion, or "pro-choice," as that distinction was only noted in the last sentence of the article.

The group also identifies itself as "the nation's biggest political action committee" and that
its goal is "to recruit, train, and support women to run for state and key local offices so that [EMILY's List] has a steady pipeline of smart, effective, and progressive [pro-abortion] Democratic women in public life."
EMILY's List only endorses pro-abortion Democrat women candidates. No other Democrat or Republican woman is currently a candidate for the Congressional seat. The group is supporting pro-abortion Democrat U.S. Senator
Hillary Rodham Clinton for President.
Pingree is a friend and supporter of current
Maine Democrat Senate President Betheda Edmonds. Edmonds failed in an effort to get over $283,000 in direct taxpayer funding for abortions through the Maine Legislature this year.
Pingree is running against pro-homosexual marriage
Maine State Senator Ethan Strimling, among others, for the Democrat Party nomination in Maine's 1st District Congressional seat.
Strimling was recently invited to speak at a mid-September meeting of the
Maine Constitution Party, to be held in West Gardiner.
Current pro-homosexual marriage, pro-abortion
Democrat Congressman Tom Allen has stated he will not seek re-election. Allen instead has announced his intention to run for U.S. Senate in 2008.
