 | | Rev. Stan Moody |
Two members of Maine's House of Representatives are attempting to mainstream homosexuality. The Democrat legislators have formed a group called the "Christian Policy Institute." Former Republican Stan Moody and liberal Presque Isle Democrat Jeremy Fisher are heading up the effort. In a July press release they attacked the League.
In the release they imply that the League exists to persecute "gays and lesbians." Distorting the whole idea of Christian love, Moody, a minister, formed the group last year to help the Democratic Party and the radical pro homosexual group that calls itself "Equality Maine" continue their assault on traditional marriage.
Not all ministers agree that Moody's views are mainstream. Rev. Dallas Henry, the President of the Christian Civic League of Maine, says of Moody's views about homosexuality, "I would argue that it certainly isn't mainstream in the evangelical church and probably not even in the general public."
Moody claims that his group is interested in creating "thoughtful dialogue." Henry thinks that is a good idea, but qualifies his statement with, "if there is honest exchange." Referring to Moody's press release, Henry said, "When the League is accused of 'imposing its views on others' it is a dead giveaway that 'dialogue' is not what Moody's group really wants. It appears that what they want is to impose their views on people without dialogue. The League has been dialoging about this issue for three decades."
Henry views Moody's implication that the League supports the persecution of "gays and lesbians" as inaccurate. "I know of no one who has been persecuted by the League. Having said that I am aware of certain extreme homosexual activists who claim to be persecuted. They base their claim on the fact that the League provides thoughtful and respectful information about homosexuality and how it harms children and families."
Should Moody's group apologize to the League for its obvious misrepresentations of the League? Rev. Henry says, "Whenever an organization tells a lie, they ought to apologize."
Tim Russell is the League's lobbyist. He spends hours in the State House hallways when the Legislature is in session. Stan Moody has passed by Russell dozens of times over the three years that the two have served the public in such close proximity to one another. Despite Moody's claim that his group exists to "inspire and encourage thoughtful dialogue," Moody never approached Russell to discuss anything. "Not once," claimed Russell in an interview this afternoon.
Russell thought Moody's avoidance was interesting when he was told that Moody's mission is to promote dialogue and tolerance. Jesus Christ teaches his followers to love their enemies. The credibility of Moody's assertion about dialogue, love and tolerance is clearly his history with the Christian Civic League of Maine, given the fact that he has publicly made the group into his enemy.
Moody claims that evangelism is less important than love in his release. Russell quipped, "Love without truth is hypocrisy, and truth without love is contemptible."
Moody was elected a Republican and then switched parties after he started serving. Russell called that the bait and switch tactic, and claims it raises questions about Moody's credibility.
