Portland Contraceptive Decision Uncovers Admission of Possible Criminal Activity
 |
In light of the King Middle School's recent admission that pre-teen schoolgirls were sexually active, the Christian Civic League of Maine announced today in a press release it will ask the State of Maine Office of the Attorney General to review the matter for an investigation into criminal activity.
According to Maine law, sexual relations between adolescents is permissible, as long as both are aged fourteen or over, and the age difference is no more than 5 years.
The Portland School Board's recent decision to allow King Middle School to give contraceptives, including abortion pills, to pre-teen schoolchildren without specifc parental notification led to the public revelation that this criminal activity was occurring.
According to Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland's school health centers, five of the 134 students who visited King Middle School's health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse. The school nurse, Laura McNeill, justified the need for prescription contraceptives because of sexual activity of the pre-teen schoolchildren.
The League is asking that concerned citizens of Maine who want to join in the filing of the request to contact the League by email. Maine citizens can send their name and address to email@cclmaine.org to be added to the petition to the Attorney General's office.
The League is in the process of organizing concerned parents who currently have children in the Portland school district. A meeting will be announced at www.leaguerecord.com in order to decide upon additional courses of action to address this issue.
League Executive Director Michael S. Heath said today from Washington, D.C. that he has talked with officials who work closely with the League about the issue. Heath reports that all possible avenues on the local, state, and federal level are being explored to rectify the issue.
