Much of downtown Fort Kent is under water today.
After learning the extent of the flooding in northern Maine, Michael S. Heath,  Executive Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, interrupted a busy schedule Thursday to meet with church leaders in Aroostook County to determine how the League can help victims of the flood. It was reported early Thursday morning that over one hundred homes in Fort Kent were flooded by the St. John and Fish rivers.  Flood stage for the Fish River is 11 feet, but early

Thursday morning, the river exceeded 14.5 feet.  Downtown Fort Kent was evacuated, as were the residents of a housing complex for senior citizens.  Onlookers expressed shock at seeing homes moved from their foundations and drifting downstream. Over six hundred families were evacuated.  Many in Fort Kent are reported to have lost their homes or livelihoods.

Border crossings into Canada were closed off, and it was feared that the International Bridge might be in danger of giving way. Flooding has also been reported along the entire length of the St. John River in New Brunswick. Fredericton also suffered heavy flooding.

One report from Madawaska said that the roads into the town were closed off, people were without food and water.  The League received a report Thursday morning saying that food was being flown into Allagash by helicopter.   Less severe flooding was reported in Ashland, Stockholm, Van Buren, and elsewhere.

Heath will meet with a town official and a local pastor tomorrow in Fort Kent to explore how the League can help.

The League is discussing holding a benefit concert, the date to be announced.  Proceeds will go to flood victims who are in need of assistance.
