The
First Congregational Church of South Portland (ME), United Church of Christ, will "proudly" host the movie
For the Bible Tells Me So in their sanctuary on Friday, November 30, 2007, at 7:00 p.m.
From the
promotional announcement published in the Cape Courier recently, the movie is "a documentary that seeks to reconcile homosexuality and Biblical scripture and reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant and often malicious misinterpretation of the Bible."
The church, in collaboration with the radical homosexual lobbying group, EqualityMaine, published
a flyer which asks "Can the love between two people ever be an abomination?"
The movie has been roundly panned, even by such secular liberal sources as the
New York Sun, which said, "The film, which purports to document the intersection of homosexuality and the Bible, is more like a primer in the gay lifestyle" and that "sane, educated, traditional Christians are sorely lacking [in the film]."
The Sun review goes on to state, "'For the Bible Tells Me So' sidesteps educated Christians who disagree with the gay lifestyle and don't want openly gay men preaching in their
churches."
The screening and following fellowship are free and open to the public. Any "money received [at the event] will be donated to the United Church of Christ's William R. Johnson Scholarship fund for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender seminary students, named in honor of the first openly gay man ordained in the United Church of Christ."

Rev. Dr. John B. McCall, the Senior Minister of the church, and
Rev. Elsa A. Peters, the Associate Minister of the church, earlier this year
both signed on to public testimony submitted to Maine's Legislature which would have given $283,000 annually in public taxpayer funds to provide abortions for low-income Maine women. The bill, LD 1309, was rejected by the Health and Human Services Committee.
Rev. Peters recently affirmed her approval of the showing of
For the Bible Tells Me So in an
online church website, although she also acknowledged division within the congregation on homosexual and transgender issues.
She states, "we will proudly be showing the film
For the Bible Tells Me So. After an intensive experience as a faith community, we have declared ourselves an
Open and Affirming congregation -- but there are members that still struggle with this identity. We are their church and they feel committed to being together even though they don't agree with this progressive stance."
The First Congregational Church of South Portland (UCC) has been
blessing homosexual unions for several years according to their church website: "After long conversation and heated debate, our members voted to authorize your ministers to offer the church's blessing to couples who sincerely seek it in the light of their Christian faith. This means a marriage license is no longer the first requirement for a service in our church. This also means that lesbian or gay couples may request a blessing of their union."
The
church is located at 301 Cottage Road in South Portland, Maine. For more information, call the church office at (207) 799-3361.
