The Maine Women's Policy Center (MWPC) is proselytizing one hundred 8th grade girls tomorrow (Thursday, March 27th) at the State House.
The MWPC is the educational arm of the Maine Women's Lobby (MWL), the most liberal advocacy group in Maine. The MWL was among a small number of groups supporting the direct public funding of abortion last year. They tried to force pro-life citizens to give nearly $300,000 of their hard earned money to pay for the abortions of Maine's most vulnerable citizens -- her poor and needy. The bill was killed in committee.
The executive director of the MWL, Sarah Standiford, testified at the public hearing on the taxpayer funding of abortion bill. She called abortion a "fundamental right" and suggested that access to abortion is "prohibited for low-income women." Abortion is not prohibited in Maine. Any woman can get an abortion for any reason.
Standiford is leading the "12th Annual Girls' Day" tomorrow. In a press release she said the girls' day "enables young women to envision themselves as leaders, and to learn how to have a voice in the issues they care about."
Standiford is tied directly to the provision of abortion in Maine, having served as the Community Organizing Manager for Planned Parenthood before assuming her duties at the MWL. Planned Parenthood provides abortions in Maine. Planned Parenthood lobbied the Legislature this year to preserve the King Middle School contraceptive program. King Middle School provides contraceptives to children who are sexually active illegally because they are younger than the age of consent, which is 14.
The MWL is also one of only a few groups that work overtime to advance the homosexual agenda in Maine law and politics. They backed the only item on the so-called "gay" lobby's agenda this session. It was a bill to force more benefits for, and recognition of, citizens who choose to identify themselves as sexually active outside of marriage. The bill passed.
Proud lesbians are featured leaders during the MWPC girls day at the State House. In addition to a staff that includes at least one activist homosexual, the day includes introductions to lesbian or pro abortion politicians. Last year's event featured appearances by Dale McCormick, Laura Fortman and Beth Edmonds. McCormick is Maine's most well-known and politically connected lesbian insider. Fortman is Labor Commissioner, and former leader of the MWL. Edmonds is the President of the Senate and perhaps the most formidable political leader for the social left.
At last year's event the MWPC trained the 8th grade girls to be abortion activists. The girls made home made signs promoting "women's health." To see pictures of last year's event click here
Last year's sponsorship included Time Warner Cable, the Alfond Foundation, Bath Iron Works, Cole Haan, Plum Creek, the Maine Troopers Association, TD Banknorth, Charlie's Motor Mall, Gardiner Savings Bank, Rite Aid, and, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. We don't have a sponsors list for this year.
The girls will be meeting with elected women leaders this year, according to the MWPC release.
