The Fort Fairfield Journal, a bi-weekly periodical published in Aroostook County, has given the Christian Civic League of Maine's Banquet, an event League President Rev. Dallas Henry called exhilariting, a front-page piece in its October 10, 2007 edition. The Fort Fairfield Journal was represented at the Banquet by publisher and editor David Deschesne, who wrote the piece.
The article details both speeches by keynote speakers, former Boston Red Sox player Bernie Carbo and Coach Dave Daubenmire as well as the Maine Values Voter Summit. The straw poll, billed as the first in the state, was won by Fred Thompson (21%), Newt Gingrich (20%) and Mike Huckabee (15%). The Republican party received 96% of the votes.
Bernie Carbo, founder of Diamond Club Ministry, explained how he came to know Christ while in a hospital bed. A man sharing a room with him talked about Christ for two days. It was revealed that the man was a Baptist pastor and Bernie acknowledged that "God knew I needed that man at that point in my life."
Coach Dave Daubenmire, founder of Pass the Salt Ministries, followed Bernie Carbo and delivered a high-octane message on the current state of the church, a recurring theme appearing in his columns on newswithviews.com. He opened with his own testimony about being delivered from sin and his prominent battle with the ACLU over prayer. Coach reflected upon Romans 1 and said the church has become ashamed of the Gospel and questioned why Christians are "hiding out in their stained glass fortresses if the Word is so powerful?" He then called for Christians to "get in the game."
About 150 people were in attendance at the Christian Civic League of Maine's Annual Fall Fundraising Banquet. Among those attending were representatives of Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, District Superintendent of the Nazarene Church Rev. Cecil Jones and
Rev. Dennis Marquardt, the Superintendent of the
Northern New England District of the Assemblies of God, and many League
supporters.
