A Dreadful Punishment for Swearing

The League has been on the receiving end of a bit of verbal abuse this past week, from new readers angered by our call to ban a certain video game, and others as well. It is always shocking to hear bad language, but more so during the Christmas season.

The best exposition of the evil of swearing is given in John Bunyan's excellent short work "The Life and Death of Mr. Badman." Bunyan uses a dialogue between a "Mr. Wiseman" and an attentive hearer to tell the sad fate of a woman notorious for her bad language. Bunyan's story reminds us once again of God's unfailing providence, and our need to pray for those who revile and despitefully use us.

The May issue of the Good News Connection carried this article by Lucie Tardif. Lucie asked Mike about an incident in 2004 that caused him to be officially censured by all of Maine's Senators. Even though it happened five years ago homosexual activists continue to "spin" the incident to advance their cause and undermine Mike's integrity.

For over a century, the Christian Civic League of Maine has been on the front line of battle when law and public policy threatened to interfere with God’s design for family life. Though its name is different now, the purpose remains the same. “We were formed to elect honest public officials, to encourage all the people of Maine in good citizenship, to enact good laws and provide for their impartial enforcement,” says Executive Director, Mike Heath, “and we will continue doing those things. We will do them with a slightly more public emphasis on the issues from a pro-family perspective with a concern for family formation, marriage and human sexuality. I'm so pleased to see so many of you here tonight! Thank you for coming out to say YES to Marriage! We needed you to be here tonight. More important, Maine needs you to be here. Tonight is your night. Make no mistake, this is about you; your sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters. What we begin here will echo through the ages.

My 21 year old Marine son, Sergeant Sean Heath, returns from combat on the border between Iraq and Syria in two days. For seven months he's performed his duty with his rifle at his side always. Just as Sean's rifle provides the capacity to bring effective force to bear at a moments notice to protect innocence and freedom, Tony Perkins ... himself a Marine, has brought you to his shoulder at this moment of crisis in the defense of marriage. Thank you for bringing us together tonight Tony. God bless you! And ... Semper Fi!

It is also a great honor to stand shoulder to shoulder tonight with other pro family heroes. Representative Cebra, Representative Hanley, Charla, Bob, Marc ... it is a privilege to stand with you to uphold marriage in Maine. I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge and honor the sacrificial leadership, extraordinary dedication and unmovable conviction of my good friends Paul and Susan Madore from Lewiston. Since that day in 1991 when they persuaded 67 percent of their neighbors to reject special rights for homosexuality in their hometown of Lewiston they have remained steadfast in the fight. They are here tonight with a plan for victory. I will talk more about that later.

Mike Heath encourages Christians to run for public office

On Sunday, February 8, the Maine Family Policy Council gathered in Bangor. The Council filled the banquet hall for a dinner and remarks from Council leadership. Pastor H.B. London offered the evening's keynote address.

For months the Council office in Augusta worked to prepare the event. Shortly after obtaining a commitment from Pastor London in the fall London was struck down by a devastating case of pneumonia that nearly killed him. He was forced to clear a busy schedule to recover. His first weekend back to public speaking brought him to Maine.

Paulie Heath, acting as event planner, challenged the board as the calendar for 2008 was running out. She urged the board to obtain at least ten table sponsorship commitments before the end of the year. Council President, Pastor Jerry Mick of Bangor Baptist Church, stepped up to the plate. He sent out letters, emails and made phone calls. The efforts of Mick and all the members of the Board caused the number of sponsorships to climb to more than ten as the year ended, assuring that the banquet would be a success.

Demographic Winter

On October 3, “Demographic Winter” Communications Director Don Feder will speak on declining birth rates and what they mean for the future of humanity at the annual banquet of The Maine Family Policy Council.

The Maine Family Policy Council -- which is associated with Focus On The Family -- was formerly The Christian Civic League of Maine, an organization founded in 1897. The Policy Council is committed to strengthening Maine families and is currently working to provide heating oil to needy families in northern Maine.

“Demographic Winter: the decline of the human family” is the first documentary to explore the rapid worldwide decline of birth rates, which have fallen more than 50% since 1979. It includes the views of eminent demographers, economists (including Nobel Laureate Gary Becker), sociologists and political leaders.

Truth Project Simulcast Scholarships Available

League executive director Mike Heath announced today that a limited number of full scholarships for young families with children or pastors are available for the exciting upcoming Truth Project simulcast event. The popular worldview training seminar, developed by Focus on the Family, will be held on September 27th. Five churches in Maine are hosting a simulcast. There is a charge to attend.

Rev. John Rankin

Rev. John C. Rankin is the President of the Theological Education Institute (TEI), based in Connecticut. He is also the League's theological consultant, and has been for many years. League executive director Mike Heath credits Rankin with linking his Christian convictions with the political call. Heath, a veteran of countless policy battles over the past twenty years, commented, "I don't think I'd be at the League today if it weren't for John."

TEI has had an online presence for a number of years now, but recently Rev. Rankin has taken his ministry in a relatively new and bold direction. He has created a YouTube channel for TEI, and has posted his first Mars Hill Forum video clip.

The "Is Same-Sex Marriage Good for the Nation?" posting is edited to be just over nine minutes long, and is fascinating to watch. In it, Rev. Rankin deftly handles one of today's most contentious issues (homosexual marriage) in one of the most difficult formats (answering questions from a hostile audience).

Brunswick Law Enforcement Bettering Maine

Because of a grant from the Mid-Coast Hospital's substance abuse prevention program, Brunswick law enforcement is encouraging bars and restaurants to enforce the liquor laws more vigilantly.

Maine's leading homosexual and cross-dressing lobby publicly declared this week to "build a presence at hundreds of polling places" this June 10th in an effort to prevent Christians, social conservatives, evangelicals, and traditional marriage supporters from signing the YES for Marriage and Equality pro-family referendum petitions.

In a May 14th article from the homosexual New England Blade publication, EqualityMaine's Executive Director Betsy Smith "outlined...a plan that asks volunteers to stand with the people the [Christian Civic] League recruits to collect signatures for the petition."

Christian Civic League of Maine Executive Director Michael Heath said, ""I think it is disgusting that so-called 'gay' groups plan on harassing dear Christian grandmothers on Primary Election Day."

I ended Thursday night, the National Day of Prayer, in Mars Hill at a prayer meeting, and started Friday morning with preachers! I joined some pastors for breakfast. We lamented the situation in Fort Kent, and all pledged to do what we could. One pastor asked if any non-monetary help was needed. I told him that I didn't know, at that point.

My son, Jared, is with me on the trip. He is driving, helping out dear ole dad. I feel safe having a U.S. Marine Corp Corporal in the drivers seat, even if he is only 19 years old. Ooooh Ahhh!

After breakfast we made a couple media stops and arrived in Fort Kent before noon. We were slowed in our journey by a full-size pick up truck towing a giant orange high-capacity pump. He was, no doubt, headed for a basement in the flooded town.

The flood had receeded dramatically by the time we arrived on the scene, but the water was still visible in many places where it didn't belong. Clouds floated lazily in a deep blue northern Maine sky. The angry flood waters of the St. John showed no interest in putting a reflected sky blue smile on its surface. On the contrary the river's water was in a foul muddy mood as it rushed to the atlantic, to the relief of some weary victims, I'm sure.

League creates official "Group" on Facebook

The League created an official Facebook Group on Sunday, January 13, 2008. Facebook is an online social networking website. Individuals must become a member of Facebook to join the Christian Civic League of Maine Group.

Facebook has millions of users worldwide. It follows on the success of another social networking site used mostly by teens called Myspace. Facebook is attracting more adults to its pages.

Technology experts predict that 2008 will be the year of social networking.

Heath Votes "No" on Question 1

The Christian Civic League of Maine is encouraging Christians across Maine to vote on November 6. The League's PAC, Gambling With the Way Life Should Be has placed its emphasis on Question 1, which asks "Do you want to allow a Maine tribe to run a harness racing track with slot machines and high-stakes beano games in Washington County ?"

Executive Director Michael Heath placed his NO vote by absentee ballot and said, "Mainers don't need the further temptation of another casino."
