As the Christian Civic League of Maine
requests a criminal investigation into the availability of
contraceptives to some of Portland's King Middle School students,
many are questioning the silence of Attorney General Steven Rowe.
An
online biography states:
"Rowe holds a law degree from the
University of Maine School of Law, a master's degree in business
administration from the University of Utah, and a bachelor's degree
from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served as
an officer in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve. Prior to becoming
Attorney General, Rowe was a litigation counsel with UNUMProvident
Corporation.
"The father of four, Steve and his wife Amanda live in Portland."
Portland's school nurse coordinator, Attorney General Steven
Rowe's wife, Amanda Rowe, has come out in support of the new policy.
"[T]here are some who persist – even though we don't like
to think about that – in being sexually active," said Amanda Rowe.
Under Maine statute, sex with a non-spousal minor under 14 is
considered gross sexual assault.
At least five of the students from the King Middle School are known to be
sexually active.
"I
t
is beyond comprehension that Maine's Attorney General, Steven Rowe,
does not know about this criminal sexual activity in the Portland
Middle Schools. His own wife is the head nurse for Portland schools.
"By her own public admission, Amanda Rowe knows of a number of
pregnancies in Portland's middle schools," said the League's Administrator Mike Hein.
Michael Heath, Executive Director of the Christian
Civic League of Maine, said of the decision, "It's at best
troubling, at worst an outrage," in an AP article recently.
Over the past few days, the
Christian Civic League of Maine has received 125 email responses to its call for a criminal investigation.
