Proposition 8- Are You a Hater?
Recently, I was asked by a local television station to give comment on Judge Walker’s decision to overturn Proposition 8. The California state constitution amendment states fully, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” I told the reporter that I was disappointed but not surprised that Judge Walker would ignore the will of the voters of California along with the voters in 31 other states who have upheld the traditional, historical definition of marriage. I also expressed concern that this ruling would likely end up in the Supreme Court where an adverse decision could force the 45 states that presently do not recognize same- sex marriage to legalize and validate those unions.

California Judge Overturns Marriage
California,
the home of blue jeans, hula hoops, flower children and the counter
culture, is a non-ending source of fad and innovation. The latest
innovation from California threatens to be an unprecedented social
disaster, however. The Family Research Council is warning that a recent
decision by a California judge, if upheld by the Supreme Court, could
spell the end of traditional marriage in America.
In 2009,
two couples, a homosexual couple from Berkeley and a lesbian couple from
Burbank, brought suit against the State of California after being
denied a marriage license. The denial of marriage licenses to same sex
couples was a result of Proposition 8, a popular referendum which
amended the California state constitution to limit marriage to one man
and one woman.

Pastor's Update
A Brainwashed Church?
When God sovereignly gave Jehoiakim to Nebuchadnezzar, it wasn't the complete obliteration of the city of Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar was determined to maintain his rule over Jerusalem with complete military action being a last resort. One of his methods was that he would take the best and the brightest from the conquered people, retrain their minds, get them to think like a Babylonian, then use them to help control their own people. And so the book of Daniel begins with this account.
Satan is not always blasting trumpets to rally the troops for a frontal assault. More often he is subtle in his approach, slowly leading astray with small compromises. Our culture today is driven by him to do exactly what Nebuchadnezzar did 2500 years ago

Augusta's Problem Bar Closes
Club OTR, a bar in downtown Augusta, has found a new owner. Thanks to the bar’s troubled past, many are wondering if the old way of doing business will continue.
The Record was the first news outlet to break the story about the reckless behavior at the bar. As a follow-up to a story about drunkenness in the state capital, The Record learned that the bar with the worst reputation for rowdiness was Club OTR. Fights between drunken bar patrons spilled out into a nearby public parking lot after hours, and young women passed out in taxis on their way to the hospital to be treated for acute alcohol poisoning.

How You Can Protect Our Soldiers
Despite the
advice of top military brass, including every member of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, Congress is poised to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
policy which prohibits homosexuals from serving openly in the armed
forces.
Maine’s own
Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee,
voted for the bill in May, over the advice of more than 1,000 top
military officials who warned the bill would harm morale and impair
combat readiness. Also opposing the bill were General George Casey,
Chief of Staff of the Army; James T. Casey, Commandant of the Marine
Corps; Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations; and General
Norton A. Schwartz, Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

Where Are All the Heroes?
Summer
is a time for building, and the construction trade brings with it the
high-pitched whine of the buzz saw and the rattle of the jackhammer. The
sound of a hammer is not always unpleasant. The stonemason’s hammer
rings out with a high, clear tone as it strikes the blocks of a
cathedral. A father’s hammer, as Dad works around the house, has a
comforting sound.
Another
pleasant sound was the sound made when Thomas E. Dewey dropped the
hammer on Lucky Luciano. Luciano was a mafia kingpin who oversaw the
gambling, narcotics, and white slavery rackets in New York City. Dewey went
to war against Luciano, and in turn, one of Luciano’s cohorts put a
contract out on Dewey.

Protect the Children
A Letter to the Editor entitled “Protect
Maine’s
Children” is raising the ire of many conservatives in
Maine. The
response to the letter has been
heated, because the author slights a number of cherished principles, not
the
least of which is the Republican Party and the institution of the
family.
The letter as a whole is an attempt to smear the
LePage
campaign, and by extension, anyone who supports the concept of “Family
Values.”
The author of the letter objects to the part of the
2010
Republican Party Platform which states "Parents, not government, are responsible for making decisions
in the
best interest of their children, whether disciplinary, educational, or
medical.”
This simple statement ought to be self-evident and incontrovertible
truth, but
in modern-day society, there are few truths with which the Left cannot
take
issue.
