"Fearful lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its identity. . . ."
--Leszek Kolakowski, from Modernity on Endless Trial

WE WILL PRAISE HIM FOREVER

"I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever. Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness."

(Psalm 145:1-7)

QUOTATIONS FOR THE DAY

"For although the counsels and judgments of God are so secret as to be absolutely unsearchable to man, yet the divine goodness has sometimes thought fit, for the confirmation of his own people, and the confutation of those who are without God in the world, to write them in such capital letters, as they who run may read them."

(Francis Bacon)

"The greatest man in history was the poorest."

(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

"We have this day restored the sovereign to Whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come!"

(Samuel Adams)

A CORRECTION TO THE RECORD

In yesterday's RECORD we indicated that Portland Press Herald reporter Paul Carrier was unethical in his approach to, and his conversation with Mike Heath at the University of Southern Maine. This was based on a misunderstanding. Tim Russell did not tell Carrier that Mike Heath would not be commenting when they spoke by phone earlier in the afternoon. Russell did tell Carrier that he would confer with Mike Heath about the request for an interview regarding "Mike Heath's tone and style." Mike Heath and Russell conferred prior to his USM speech, and decided that Mike Heath would not be commenting on the "tone and style" issue. While Paul Carrier was clearly out of line by approaching Mike Heath when he did - five minutes before the speech was scheduled to start - and in the manner he did, he did not do anything unethical.

THE MOOD IS JOYFUL AS THE LEAGUE PREPARES TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR

The mood at the League office in Augusta is joyous as the League and its friends and supporters prepare to hold our annual banquet. The featured speaker at the banquet will be Rabbi Daniel Lapin of the organization "Towards Tradition." The League is looking back on a year of progress and achievement and at the same time, is eagerly looking forward to the year to come. We thank the Lord fervently for His guidance and protection, and humbly invoke His help and favor for the year to come!

THE BROOKS OF MAINE

"It is worth something to have been born in a land like Maine that was set up edge-ways. Nature made Maine special and to the order of the angels who adore beauty. The waters of the sea, they cupped our harbors, and the Lord thereof, He built the hills, that they might gather the snows that swirl over them in our majestic winters and that they might also brood over the brooks that are born in the first flush of spring.

Do you see them? They are like a lace-work of silver in a field of  crystal and emerald! They are like the jeweled fingers of a beautiful woman on a plate of jade. And when the hills flame, Nature stands aside and smiles and says 'Look at my handiwork.' And all the hosts of Heaven smile and are glad!"

(Arthur G. Staples)

TRUTH IN LOVE

The Christian Education League is joining with Free Indeed Ministries to present an exciting and informative seminar which will share the Christian perspective on the problems of homosexuality. The seminar will address such questions as the origins of homosexuality, how to speak to someone who subscribes to pro-gay theology, and how best to reach someone who is involved in homosexuality with the Gospel. Part of the seminar will be taken up with dispelling many of the myths about homosexuality which are current in society.

The seminar is especially useful for teens, and is intended for anyone whose life is affected by homosexuality. The seminar will be held at Faith Evangelical Church in Waterville this Saturday October 8th. To register please call 1-800-763-2115. The cost of registration is $10.
