"Fearful lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its identity. . . ."

A Time for Action
QUOTATIONS OF THE DAY

"When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling, peace has become sin; and you must, at the price of dearest peace, lay your convictions bare before friend and enemy, with all the fire of your faith."

(Abraham Kuyper)

"Every duty done is a rainbow to the heart.)

(Theodore Roosevelt)

PEOPLES VETO RULED VALID BY OVER SIX THOUSAND SIGNATURES
Thanks to the dedication and perseverance of our friends and supporters, the Peoples Veto Petition has been ruled valid by a margin of over six thousand signatures. The final count was 56, 650 valid signatures out of a total of 63,476 signatures submitted, far surpassing the required number of 50,519 signatures. These high numbers are all the more remarkable given the fact that the citizens of Maine were given only half the usual time to collect the signatures. Such high numbers are a reflection of the broad support which the Peoples Veto enjoys among the public, and is a promising sign for the vote in November.

The League once again extends its thanks to all those who participated in the signature-gathering process.

Summer Intern Wins High Praise
The League extends its best wishes to Lecia Greipp, a second year law student at St. Johns Law School interning with the Alliance Defense Fund. Everyone at the League was impressed by Lecia’s dedication to her work, her cheerfulness, and her friendly manner. Added to this, is the fact that she is an extraordinarily bright and capable individual with the highest ideals. It was when she read one of the prayers at the Prayer Across America event that we realized her unique gifts. She is truly a special person, with a bright future ahead of her. Everyone at the League wishes her success and happiness in the years to come.

Goodbye, Millers! Hello, Hollywood Slots!

Construction is underway on Maine’s first Las Vegas style one-armed bandit parlor, Hollywood Slots, on Main Street in Bangor. Penn National has been hard at work since the start of the month renovating the former Millers Restaurant, and now the interior of Millers, a landmark in Bangor for over fifty years, has been entirely gutted.

This past week, workers poured the concrete and installed an elevator. When asked what the inside of Hollywood Slots would look like when it was finished, Jon Johnson, General Manager of Hollywood Slots, replied that the colors would be "a tasteful blue, red, gold, and mustard." If Penn National’s Hollywood Casino in Aurora, Illinois is any indication, there will be plenty of Las Vegas glitz and glitter, and plenty of low-brow Hollywood vulgarity – but what else should we expect since casino gambling used to be a criminal enterprise under Maine state law?

Hollywood Slots is expected to open sometime in November.

Strange Critters
DASYURES

The little-known dasyures (pronounced das-y-ures) are not a single species but rather a group of animals which are so unique they are in a category all their own. Closely resembling cats, from which they derive the name Tiger Cat or Native Cat, they are in fact marsupials whose range is limited to Southern Australia, New Guinea, and Tasmania.

They are fierce predators and are fast, agile climbers. Hiding in burrows or rocks during the day, they roam at night in search of prey. Many species are distinguished by large eyes, a bushy tail, and white spots.
