"Fearful
lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity
seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being
devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact
self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming
the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its
identity. . . ."

Prayer
Across
America
comes to
Maine
|
|
 |
|
 |
 |
Augusta became
the forty-third
state capitol to
be visited by
the Prayer
Across America
prayer team
yesterday as a
small group
assembled in
front of the
Capitol
Building, and
Dr. J. Phillip
Epperson
proclaimed
America’s urgent
need for prayer.
Though it was a
small group, the
meeting was
deeply moving
because of the
earnestness and
sincerity of the
participants.
Several times,
Dr. Epperson,
otherwise a very
reserved and
quiet man, broke
into tears as he
knelt and
prayed; and
there were tears
in the eyes of
many in the
crowd, as one
fellow on
crutches, prayed
from the passage
in Isaiah which
pronounces woe
on those who put
evil for good
and good for
evil.
Dr. Epperson
spoke of his
fervent hope
that the Holy
Spirit would
stir up prayer
in each village
and town in
Maine, and that
a spiritual
renewal would
start in the
Northeast, the
site of the
Great Awakening,
and sweep
westward like a
spiritual
tsunami. Mrs.
Epperson prayed
for three
things: that God
would provide
jobs for Maine;
that integrity
would be
restored in the
home, the
family, and the
church; and that
leadership would
be restored to
its rightful
place in the
home, the
church, and in
state
government.
Tim Russell,
Legislative
Liaison of the
League, led an
inspiring prayer
for the members
of our State
Government,
praying for each
by name, from
the Governor on
down to the
Senate President
and the
Secretary of
State - that
each would have
wisdom and would
follow the law
of the Lord.
The staff
members of the
Christian Civic
League also read
a prayer. Both
Dustin Heath and
Lecia Greipp did
a superb job.
They
demonstrated
insight and
intelligence
beyond their
years. Both are
interns for the
summer. Dustin
is Mike Heath's
oldest son and a
sophomore at
Grove City
College in
western
Pennsylvania.
Lecia is a
second year law
school student
interning from
the Alliance
Defense Fund.
Paul Madore, the
leader of the
Maine Grass
Roots Coalition
gave a moving
prayer which
closed out the
meeting; and
Michelle Truman
read the
benediction.

A wealthy man
decided to go on
a safari in
Africa taking
his faithful pet
dog along for
company. One day
the dog starts
chasing
butterflies and
before long he
finds he is
lost. Wandering
about he notices
a leopard
heading rapidly
in his direction
with the obvious
intention of
having lunch.
The dog thinks,
"Boy, I'm in
deep trouble
now." Then he
noticed some
bones on the
ground close by,
and immediately
settles down to
chew on the
bones with his
back to the
approaching cat.
Just as the
leopard is about
to leap, the dog
exclaims loudly,
"Man, that was
one delicious
leopard. I
wonder if there
are any more
around here?"
Hearing this the
leopard halts
his attack in
mid stride, as a
look of terror
comes over him,
and slinks away
into the trees.
"Whew", says the
leopard. "That
was close. That
dog nearly had
me."
Meanwhile, a
monkey who had
been watching
the whole scene
from a nearby
tree, figures he
can put this
knowledge to
good use and
trade it for
protection from
the leopard. So,
off he goes. But
the dog saw him
heading after
the leopard with
great speed, and
figured
something must
be up.
The monkey soon
catches up with
the leopard,
spills the beans
and strikes a
deal for himself
with the
leopard. The cat
is furious at
being made a
fool of and
says, "Here
monkey, hop on
my back and see
what's going to
happen to that
conniving
canine."
Now the dog sees
the leopard
coming with the
monkey on his
back, and
thinks," What am
I going to do
now?" But
instead of
running, the dog
sits down with
his back to his
attackers
pretending he
hasn't seen them
yet. And just
when they get
close enough to
hear, the dog
says, "Where's
that monkey?! I
just can never
trust him. I
sent him off
half an hour ago
to bring me
another leopard,
and he's still
not back!!"

GOLD CORAL
The photo at the
right was taken
in a Hawaiian
coral reef.
Often resembling
vegetable forms,
including
bizarre forms
such as cabbage
and lettuce,
coral is built
from minerals
that are
produced by
colonies of
minute sea
creatures. These
simple
organisms, which
are only a few
millimeters in
length, share
nutrients
through the
passageways in
the coral.
Although a large
colony is formed
by the
organisms, each
is identical to
the others
genetically - in
other words, a
clone.
There is an
endless variety
of shapes and
sizes, but the
two shown on the
right are among
the most
brightly
colored.
Coral is a
prized gemstone
among many
peoples, and was
in Biblical
times, being
mentioned in the
Book of Job and
the Book of
Ezekiel
alongside rubies
and pearls.
Coral in the
Gulf of Aquaba
provides
evidence for the
rescue of the
Israelites from
the hand of
Pharaoh. The
coral is about
the size of the
wheels and axles
from the
chariots of
Pharaoh's army,
and has been
shown by experts
to date from the
time of Ramses
II, the pharaoh
described in the
Book of Exodus.
