"Fearful lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its identity. . . ."
--Leszek Kolakowski, from Modernity on Endless Trial

A Spirit of Discernment
“He was going back, seated in his carriage, and was reading the book of the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, Go near, and get on his carriage. And Philip, running up to him, saw that he was reading Isaiah the prophet, and said to him, “Is the sense of what you are reading clear to you?” He said, "How can I, unless someone explains it to me?" He begged Philip to come up and sit with him.”

(Acts 8:28-31)

"Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry."

(1Corinthians 10:14)

Idols of the Marketplace
“The idols of the marketplace [that is, the catch phrases of the mass media] cause the greatest problems, and from a common agreement among mankind with regard to the use of words and names, insinuate themselves into the understanding; for words are generally given according to the common conception, and divide things by such differences as the public in general is capable of, but when a more acute understanding, or a more careful observation would make things clearer, the words themselves murmur against it.”

(Francis Bacon)

'Maine Won't Discriminate' Turns to Bright Lights and Big City
As the left well knows, the most effective way to instill its message in the mind of an undiscerning public is to make use of the stars and idols of Hollywood. With the exception of Charleton Heston and Mel Gibson, most actors and actresses are uniformly of the liberal persuasion, and the confidence which they enjoy with the public makes them the secret weapon of the culture wars.

The tradition of using traveling actors to put across a political message is very old indeed. The heroes of ancient Babylon, after being elevated to a divine status, were used to overawe the public, and from this we derive the concept of a “star.” Similarly, Plato in his book “The Republic” spoke of the danger of those unscrupulous rulers who used itinerant actors to endorse a political message. These travelling actors, Plato compared to “wandering planets,” which is, of course, just another name for a “star.”

So it should come as no surprise to us here in Maine, that left-wing elitists are bringing stars from the big city to dazzle the unsuspecting locals. In our case, Maine Won’t Discriminate is bringing Lily Tomlin to Portland to lend her credibility to Governor John Baldacci’s gay rights bill. In 2000, Tomlin appeared on a New York City cable access program “Gay USA” to reveal the fact that she is a Lesbian. Currently, Tomlin plays a presidential assistant on the television series “West Wing,” which the left uses to disseminate its message to the public under the guise of entertainment.

Following the performance by Tomlin at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, a reception will be held, where according to Maine Won’t Discriminate, the public will be served “hors d’oeuvres” and drinks and will be given the honor of meeting Tomlin in person – all for the incredibly cheap price of $150 - which is just about the weekly grocery bill for a family of four in Maine! No, siree - no elitism here!

Pro-gay Churches Found to Have Ties to the Occult
Earlier this month, The RECORD revealed the fact that the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland was the site of Maine Pagan Pride Day 2005. Among the exhibitors advertised as planning to attend the event were representatives of the most extreme and darkest form of the so-called “pagan” movement.

Members of the Allen Avenue Church have boasted online of having sent the largest contingent of supporters to one of Portland’s Gay Pride Parades. Equality Maine, the most powerful pro-homosexual group in Maine, is promoting as part of its “Faith Outreach” a bumper sticker which proclaims “My Church Believes in Civil Rights For All.” The bumper sticker was produced by a member of the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland.

The RECORD has now learned that two other pagan organizations have ties to Unitarian Universalist Churches in Maine. According to the website of CUUPS, the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans, two groups calling themselves the Rowan Grove and the Pine Tree Circle are affiliated with the Universalist Church of Westbrook and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth, respectively. Included under the heading of “paganism” or “neo-paganism” are such cults as Asatru, Druidism, Goddess Worship, or Witchcraft (Wicca). It is not known to which of these cults the groups active within the churches at Westbrook and Ellsworth are involved, but it is interesting to note that Wicca makes use of the imagery of forests and groves. One of the stated principles of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth is that it draws from “Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life…” The term “sacred circle” is of course, frequently associated with paganism. Its use by the Unitarian Universalist Church, if unintentional, is unfortunate, since a “sacred circle” is also fundamental to the practice of witchcraft.

League Banquet Promises to Be Best Ever
Be sure to plan to attend the upcoming League banquet in October. This year’s event promises to be the most exciting ever, with a keynote speech to be delivered by Rabbi Daniel Lapin of the organization “Towards Tradition.” Rabbi Lapin is an outspoken defender of traditional values and the family, and a strong critic of the values of secular humanism.

The theme of the event is Micah 6:8 “He hath shown thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

In view of the need at this critical hour in our nation’s history for Christians to start speaking with a prophetic voice, the League will offer tables named after the prophets of the Old Testament. Tables can be sponsored at the following levels:

Jeremiah: $1000 includes a table with seating and meals for eight to ten people, and a signed copy of Rabbi Lapin's book for each person.

Jonah: $500 includes a table with seating and meals for eight to ten people.

Daniel: $250 includes a half table with seating and meals for four to five people.

In addition, the League will hold its annual awards ceremony, and music will be provided by Paulie Heath.

Seating will be limited, so please make arrangements early.

The banquet will be held at the Senator Inn in Augusta on October 7th, starting at 6:00.
