"Fearful
lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity
seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being
devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact
self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming
the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its
identity. . . ."

Conference and Seminar to Emphasize

There are many examples of New Age nuttiness, each
tale stranger than the one before. For example,
one New Age group is soliciting funds to build a
“Peace Palace” in the city of Portland. This same
group claims to have paid an American follower his
weight in gold for the “ground-breaking scientific
discovery" that the human body follows the laws of
astrology. But whether the following story makes
you laugh or cry, or jump up and down in anger,
probably depends on the mood you are in when you
read it.
One practitioner of New Age techniques is offering
his followers spiritual enlightenment by taking
them to a casino in Las Vegas. There he
demonstrates the ability of the mind to control
matter by influencing the roll of the dice. The
guru behind the mind-over- matter field trips, a
psychologist with twenty years’ clinical
experience, also offers a path to enlightenment
which “teaches you to use the power of your mind
to heal illness, bend metal and plastic, grow
seeds, influence computers and dice, illumine
light bulbs, and manifest your desires.” Another
part of the technique involves removing the
harmful effects of early religious training, such
as the consciousness of guilt – all for a mere
$700, payable by MasterCard or Visa.

Time Warner, which along with Hannaford
Supermarkets, the Portland Press Herald, Verizon,
and Norway Savings bank, was among the elite
corporate sponsors of the Equality Maine awards
banquet this year, has decided to donate $5 to
Equality Maine for every person who signs up to
the “Q” Channel, the homosexual lifestyle channel.
Within one week after going on the air in Maine,“Q”
Channel broadcast live from a gay bar in Portland.
All in all, it seems a clever marketing ploy, to
take a mere $5, an insignificant amount compared
to the subscription fee, and to give it to
Equality Maine.
