"Fearful lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its identity. . . ."
--Leszek Kolakowski, from Modernity on Endless Trial

How to Put Things Right
"Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish."

(Jonah 3:8, 9)

Slow but Sure
"Though the mills of God grind slowly,
Yet they grind exceeding small;
Though with patience He stands waiting,
With exactness grinds He all."

(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, from a quote by an ancient author “The mills of God’s justice grind slowly, but they grind exceeding fine.”)

Statewide Anti-Slots Campaign Starts this Friday
League director Michael Heath will join with Paul Madore in a statewide “Protect Your Pocketbook” tour this weekend, which will start with a press conference at 4 p.m. in front of “Hollywood Slots” on Main Street in Bangor.

The League will work with No Slots for ME! and the Maine Grassroots Coalition headquartered in Lewiston to collect 50,519 verified voter signatures before October 4, 2005. If the groups are successful, then the voters of Maine will be asked if they want to ban slot machines in a statewide vote next year.

Local Brewer businessman Calvin Bubar, who is the grandson of Ben Bubar Sr., is chairman of the Bangor/Brewer chapter of No Slots for ME! Bubar will speak at the 4 p.m. press conference and rally. Local meetings will be held after the press conference and rally. The schedule and locations are as follows:

Bangor Baptist Church * 6:30 p.m. Friday night * August 26, 2005

The Old Armory on Spring Street in Millinocket * 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning * August 27, 2005

Military Street Baptist Church in Houlton * 1:00 p.m. Saturday * August 27, 2005

State Street Baptist Church in Presque Isle * 6:30 p.m. Saturday * August 27, 2005

Washington County and Hancock County locations for Sunday will be announced.

Mike Heath and Paul Madore will meet with citizens at the local stops and discuss the No Slots for ME! petition effort. They will also briefly address plans for the upcoming Coalition for Marriage campaign on the fall ballot’s Question 1 related to transsexual special rights.

No Slots for ME! is bringing signs, T-shirts and petitions to the press conference and rally.

Calvin Bubar can be reached at 207-989-5362.
The League can be reached at 207-622-7634.

The High Social Costs of Slot Machine Addiction
If you are worried that the gambling ‘industry’ is slowly wrapping its cold, wet tentacles around the neck of Maine – and it is - we urge you to visit the website of No Slots for ME! You can go there by clicking on the link below.

You will be shocked to learn how the Legislature worked with gambling interests to rewrite Maine’s 2003 Citizen’s Initiative so that a larger share of the gambling ‘revenue’ would go to the owners of the gambling establishments.

You will also find out, that contrary to the claim made by the gambling 'industry' that slot machines appeal only to “white-haired elderly ladies” - slot machines are in reality THE MOST ADDICTIVE form of gambling. You will also find out more about the high social costs of slot machine gambling.

No Slots for ME! to Appear on Radio
Calvin Bubar, Chairman of the Bangor/Brewer chapter of No Slots for ME! will be appearing on the “Maine in the Morning” show on WVOM 103.9 FM this Friday at 6:33 a.m. The show has the potential to be an exciting one, since one of the hosts, George Hale, is also – believe it or not – the chairman of the Gambling Control Board of Maine and an outspoken proponent of gambling. It was Hale who in a January 13, 2005 meeting of the Gambling Control Board urged the board to support a confidentiality bill which would keep the legal history and other personal information of the officers of Penn National secret from the public.

So be sure to listen, and even call in, if you're so inclined!
