"Fearful lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its identity. . . ."

Zero Tolerance for Sexual Sin
“I wrote to you in my letter to have no company with sexual sinners; yet not at all meaning with the sexual sinners of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then you would have to leave the world. But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. Don't even eat with such a person. But those who are outside, God judges. 'Put away the wicked man from among yourselves.'"

(1 Corinthians 5:9-13)

A Tribute to Maine
"I owe a personal debt to Maine because of my association with certain staunch friends in Aroostook County: an association that helped and benefited me throughout my life in more ways than one."

(Theodore Roosevelt)

How Bible Point Got its Name
Many of our readers will recall that Teddy Roosevelt was introduced to the outdoor life here in Maine. As a youth, he spent his summers hunting, camping, and fishing in the woods near Island Falls. But not many know that there is a place in Maine which owes its name to America’s most popular president.

Roosevelt made a point of reading the Bible every day, and on his trips to Maine he sought out a spot near the southern end of Mattawamkeag Lake where he could read the Bible and enjoy the beauty of nature. The place he chose was a spot of land where First Brook joined the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River. To this day, the place is known as Bible Point.

At Bible Point, there is a sign which reads as follows:

“This place to which a great man in his youth liked to come to commune with God and with the wonder and beauty of the visible world is dedicated to the happy memory of Theodore Roosevelt. Stranger rest here, and consider what one man having faith in the right, and love for his fellow man was able to do for his country.”

Which is something to remember, the next time someone says that Christianity should have no role in the life of our nation.

Pro-gay 'Church' Opens the Door to Darkness
The RECORD has always maintained that same-sex marriage is the most dangerous component of what many are calling “The Ideology of Evil.” Despite the best efforts of the mass media and the Liberal Establishment to portray homosexuality as normal and wholesome, on closer examination, the public invariably discovers that sexual relations between individuals of the same sex are dangerous and unhealthy, to say the least. But those who take a superficial view of the matter are liable to be deceived. Similarly, those who take a superficial and incautious view of what happens inside Liberal churches are also likely to be deceived. All may appear fine on the outside, but the inside can often be a veritable spiritual House of Horrors.

A case in point is the goings on at the Allen Avenue Universalist Unitarian Church in Portland. The Allen Avenue Church has been host to many Liberal events, such as anti-war activism and hosting the annual meeting of Peace Action Maine. In past years, the church has boasted of sending the largest contingent to Portland’s yearly Gay Pride Parade.

But in a few days, the Allen Avenue Church will be host to Maine Pagan Pride Day 2005. Among the many strange events to be held at the church that day will be pagan rituals, pagan workshops, instruction in witchcraft, and a Harry Potter Dress-up Contest for Children.

But these excursions into the world of the occult are mild in comparison to that which will be offered by one exhibitor at the Allen Avenue Church. One exhibitor is an unabashed advocate of the same organization founded by Aleister Crowley – in other words, he will be offering Devil-worship to the public. Now call us old-fashioned, or too conservative, but Devil-worship has no place in any building called a church. But then again, if someone can be deceived into thinking that same-sex marriage is healthy and wholesome, they can no doubt be deceived into thinking that the world of the occult offers no dangers. It is all part of what the Bible calls being given over to a reprobate mind.

Calvin Bubar Named Chairman of Bangor/Brewer Chapter of No Slots for ME
The following is a press release that was issued today on the appointment of Calvin Brewer as head of the Bangor/Brewer chapter of No Slots for ME.
---------------------------------------------------------------

A rally in support of the No Slots for ME! Citizens Initiative Petition drive will be held in front of Hollywood Slots on Main Street in Bangor at 4:00 P.M. Friday, August 26, 2005. The press and public are invited. Petitions will be available, and circulators will be on hand to collect the signatures of citizens who wish to sign the petition.

The No Slots for Maine board of directors is pleased to name local Brewer businessman Calvin Bubar as the Chairman for the Bangor/Brewer chapter of No Slots for ME! The appointment of Calvin Bubar has a special significance for the Christian Civic League and the people of Maine. Bubar is the grandson of the fiery evangelist Benjamin Bubar, who as a member of the Maine legislature, led a valiant fight against gambling interests and won. Benjamin Bubar is also the son of Benjamin Bubar, Jr., former Executive Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine.

The membership and staff of the Christian Civic League are encouraged and excited by the appointment of Calvin Bubar to this position. We are confident that he will be an effective leader in the effort to ban slots in Maine, and that he will carry on the tradition of his family by doing his utmost to preserve Maine’s reputation for honest government and a safe and upright civic life.

League executive director Michael Heath will join Bubar at the Rally on Friday. A representative from the statewide No Slots for Maine! Board of Directors will speak, as will Rev. Jerry Mick of the Bangor Baptist Church. The Maine Grassroots Coalition headed by Paul Madore is also sending representatives from Lewiston. Citizens carrying signs and wearing No Slots for Maine! T-shirts will encourage passers by to join them in fighting this evil plague.

Organizers must gather 50,519 signatures before October 4, 2005 to force a vote on allowing addictive and predatory slot machine gambling in Maine.

Calvin Bubar can be reached at his home phone number 989-5362.
