"Fearful
lest it be relegated to the position of an isolated sect, Christianity
seems to be making frenzied efforts at mimicry in order to escape being
devoured by its enemies--a reaction that seems defensive, but is in fact
self-destructive. In the hope of saving itself, it seems to be assuming
the colors of its environment, but the result is that it loses its
identity. . . ."

The RECORD has learned that a
newspaper critical of the
Department of Human Services,
the most mismanaged branch of
state government, was banned
from welfare offices in Bangor
and Orono.
“The Common Sense Independent,”
a newspaper published by the
investigative journalist
Terrilyn Simpson was removed
from a children’s dental clinic
after being placed there by a
citizen concerned about the
scandals at DHS. The papers were
removed on the instruction of
Shawn Yardley, Welfare Director
of the City of Bangor. Yardley
had worked seventeen years at
the Department of Human
Services. When asked why the
paper was removed, Yardley
answered that he had received a
complaint from a foster mother.
It is certainly an irony that a
paper named “Common Sense,” the
title of the pamphlet which
helped spark the American
Revolution, was removed from
government offices embarrassed
by its content. It was Tom Paine
who wrote “Society in every
state is a blessing, but
Government, even in its best
state is a necessary evil; in
its worst state, an intolerable
one.”
But has the Department of Human
Services descended to a level
where it is no longer a
necessary evil, but an
intolerable one? One fact is
indisputable, and that is that
poorly-paid and
inadequately-trained government
workers are given the greatest
power a government can wield –
the ability to break up families
on the basis of arbitrary and
subjective criteria - without
the right of appeal. The
likelihood of a wrong decision
being made is great, and the
results can be catastrophic.
For those who think all DHS
workers are capable of making
the right decision, they need
only reflect on the example of
Sally Scofield and Logan Marr.
Schofield was a DHS worker at
the time of Logan Marr’s death.
Couple this potential for error
and wrongdoing with a
left-leaning ideology directed
against the home and the
traditional definition of the
family – and oriented towards
psychology and the behavioral
sciences - and one has a virtual
recipe for injustice and
over-reaching governmental
control.
